When Ralph Rinzler interviewed him for the liner notes of “The High Lonesome Sound of Bill Monroe and His Blue Grass Boys,” Monroe said, “I was going to be sure through my life I played some blues … If you’ll listen to my work you’ll see that there’s blues in it.” Through his vocals, his mandolin work, his songwriting, and his choice of sidemen, Bill Monroe made sure that the blues was a part of the music that he created – bluegrass.
