Francisco de Orellana spent most of his life exploring the Amazon and his stories inspired the name of the expansive river. When he returned to Europe, to become governor of these newly discovered lands and gained the attention not only of King Charles I of Spain but also King John III of Portugal.
Francisco de Orellana’s Early Life
Orellana was born somewhere between 1490 and 1511 in Trujillo, Spain and was either related to or close friends with conquistadors Francisco and Gonzalo Pizarro. In 1527 he traveled to the Indies where he served first in Nicaragua before serving under Francisco Pizarro in Peru in 1535. Pizarro was in a civil war with Diego de Almagro at the time and when Pizarro was victorious he appointed Orellana as Governor of La Culata and he reestablished the town of Guayaquil which had been originally founded by Pizarro.
