With an art collection featuring items from antiquity to the present, the Memphis Brooks Art Museum immerses the Memphis visitor in the world of art. Founded in 1913 with the gift of Bessie Vance Brooks, the museum has continued to grow. From 1933, when it housed just nineteen paintings, the museum has grown to include 8,5000 works of art in an 86,000 square foot building.

The Collections at the Memphis Brooks Art Museum

The Memphis Brooks' collections are divided into several sections such as Painting and Sculpture, Decorative Arts and Design, Ancient Art, and African Art. It also houses a substantial collection of pieces from the acclaimed regional artist (originally from Arkansas,) named Carroll Cloar. The permanent collection also includes representatives from various artistic schools including Italian Renaissance, Baroque, British, French Impressionism, and a number of 20th Century artists. Artists in the collections include Pissaro, Renoir, Winslow Homer, Kenneth Noland, Robert Motherwell, and Nancy Graves
