When Elagabalus and the Imperial retinue arrived in Rome, in the autumn of 219, Elagabalus gave many of his supporters lavish rewards and high profile offices. This angered the Senate, who did not regard Elagabalus’ supporters as being respectable. In addition to serving as the Prefect of the Praetorian Guard, Publius Valerius Comazona Eutychianus served as city prefect three times and the held the Consulship twice. Elagabalus tried to have his chariot driver, and alleged lover, Hieroclese declared Caesar and another lover, Aurelius Zoticus, appointed to the position of Cubicularius. However, Elagabalus stood by his promise of amnesty to the Senate, although he did arrange to have the jurist Ulpian sent into exile.

The Early Reign of Emperor Elagabalus

The relationship between Julia Maesa, Julia Soaemias and Elagabalus was initially strong. Julia Maesa and Julia Soaemias became the first women to enter the Senate. Julia Soaemias took the title Clarissima, while Julia Maesa took the title Mater Castrorum et Senatus. Julia Maesa tried to set her self up as the power behind Elagabalus and become the most powerful woman in the world. However, Elagabalus proved to be highly independent, set in his ways and virtually impossible to predict.
