Contrary to the common Western misconception, Islam highly values women’s role in society and grants them numerous rights on all levels – spiritual, social, economic and political. In addition, it prohibits oppressing women or mistreating them under any circumstances.

The misconception about the status of women in Islam stems from the failure to attribute the mistreatment of some Muslim women to the underlying social, traditional and cultural factors that totally contradict with religious teachings. Judging the whole issue should be based on the interpretation of the original Islamic texts, and not by observing wrong actions done by individual Muslims in both Muslim and non-Muslim countries.

This article will highlight the spiritual and social rights of women in Islam according to the Quran and Hadith (Prophet Muhammad’s Sayings).
